Excerpt

Straightening, she crossed her arms. She was more attractive than he’d envisioned. He’d pictured a middle-aged, dried-up hag with a pointy nose. Maybe with a little greenish tinge to her skin. He’d imagined a monster. How else would he see the woman who’d counseled his brother and failed to stop him from killing himself?
However, life was a cruel bitch, and Maggie Trent was quite pretty. She was about Kyle’s age—twenty-eight—but had little pleats between her eyebrows that gave the sense she worried too much. Maybe she had anxiety.
She blinked—her eyes were the color of Dad’s special recipe Christmas stout, dark and rich like bittersweet chocolate. A light freckle dotted her upper right cheek. He couldn’t get a good sense of her hair because it was wound up on her head, though it was also dark, and little springy curls grazed the back of her neck.
“If you’re done staring, you should go.”
“No, I don’t think so.” He cracked a lazy smile, which didn’t reflect the animosity roiling inside of him. “The going, I mean. I’m done staring.”

She finally strode to the passenger side of his car and rapped on the window.
He rolled it down and arched a brow at her from the driver’s seat. God, he was sexy. That really sucked.
“Aren’t you going to leave?” she asked.
“I was waiting until after you went inside.”
“Let me guess, another lesson in gentlemanliness from your mother?”
His mouth tried to smile, but he suppressed it. “You don’t have to sound so annoyed by it. Any other woman would be impressed.”
Her purse strap slipped down her arm. “Is that what you’re trying to do, impress me?” Was she flirting with him? Why in the hell was she flirting with him?

“You’re comparing me to Russell Crowe in Gladiator. Damn, that’s about the best compliment I’ve had all week.”
She punched him in the arm, reminding him sweetly of his sister Sara. “All week? You’re pretty full of yourself, you know that?”
“Look at me, baby; wouldn’t you be too?”

She pursed her lips.
“When you do that, I just want to kiss you, and it looks as though your mouth wants me to too. Does it?”
She blinked up at him. Her tongue darted out and glossed her lower lip.
“I’ll take that as a yes,” he murmured before claiming her mouth.

“Because I can’t believe you came from a family of self-absorbed jerks.”
The intensity of his stare would’ve burned her if it had been a tangible thing. “Why not? Most people think I’m the most self-absorbed jerk of them all.”
“Then you aren’t showing them who you really are.” She moved her hand up his arm, skimming over his muscled flesh until she reached his bicep. “You aren’t showing them what you show me.”
He reached out, grasped a curl beside her cheek, and brushed it back, his fingertips grazing her scalp. “What do you see when you look at me?”
“A thoughtful, caring gentleman who wants to do right by his brother, by his family. Who wants to find a way back home.”
“I know this is therapy, that you’re saying this as a professional, but I don’t care.” He bent his head toward her. “Thank God you’re here.” His lips brushed over hers. The contact was gentle but soared through her like a bird taking flight. Triumphant, joyous.
“I’m not saying that as your therapist,” she said against his mouth. “I’m not your therapist. I’m . . . hell, I don’t know what I am.” She curled her hands around his neck and pulled him down to kiss him more deeply.
