FINAL HOURS
One man’s death will change the future.
Only two people can save him – if they have the courage to trust each other.
Elizabeth Barritt fought hard for the life she has, finally putting the ugly memories of a childhood trapped in the foster care system behind her. She has the chance to move forward, to reach out for a new, exciting future, surrounded by the art that is her passion. All she has to do is take the first step.
Enter Jackson Kane, who bursts into her life, literally out of thin air. He is a time traveler, on the hunt for a rogue agent. Colliding with Elizabeth is not on his agenda, as much as she intrigues him.
When Kane is injured protecting Elizabeth from that agent, she makes a decision that will change her life, in ways she couldn’t even begin to grasp. She takes him home.
Once he is healed enough to travel, Kane goes after the agent, chasing him back to war-torn London. But his journey back takes a sideways turn, forcing Elizabeth to make another choice. She follows him into the past, to help him stop one man from changing their future.
Together, they learn to trust. What they don’t expect is the connection between them - a connection so strong they can’t fight it, even as they try. Because how can it work, when their lives are centuries apart?

EXCERPT
Elizabeth knew, when she saw his eyes change, just what he had planned as he stalked back across the lab.
She couldn’t move, could hardly breathe.
When he swept her up and his lips possessed hers, she expected a hot, fierce, angry kiss. Instead, his lips gentled, exploring hers. The effect was devastating.
He broke through every barrier she’d spent years building, and she felt her heart open to him, trembling, vulnerable.
Both arms reached up to wrap around his neck, and her fingers slid into his thick, unruly hair. He tasted like mint. She let out a low moan when he eased her mouth open, deepening the kiss. She forgot their audience, forgot her fear of becoming attached to a man who would leave her alone, forgot everything but the feel of his lips, the strength of his arms, the heat of his body.
His hand slipped up her back, tangled in her hair as he angled her head, pulled her in deeper. Heat spiraled through her, and the need to get closer had her arching in to him.
She could feel his rapid heartbeat, hear his ragged breath as he started to lose control. Or was that her breath, so fast and hard it made her lightheaded?
Kane broke off the kiss, staring down at her.
“God help me,” he whispered, just before he dove in again.
This time it was fierce and hungry, and she rode the wild emotions, abandoning any attempt to hold back. His demanding mouth, the hands curving over her hips and pressing her tight against him refused to let her retreat.
She lost herself in the heat, in the need for another person she had never felt before. A need she protected herself from, in a life that had no guarantees, and more disappointment than she thought she could ever take and stay whole—
This time she broke off the kiss, fighting to catch her breath, terrified that it was too late. Kane rested his forehead against hers, his own breathing just as labored. “I simply meant to say goodbye.”
“That was some goodbye,” she whispered.
“Too much?” Humor edged his deep voice.
“Unforgettable.”
With a quiet sigh, he pressed his lips to her temple. “Ready for this?”
“No.”
His laughter soothed her nerves. “I need you to ease your death grip on my neck, love.”
The endearment had her tensing again. Oh, yes—it was too late. She liked him before they landed in his time. Now she wanted him. How the hell was she supposed to forget the way his lips felt on hers, the raw, uncontrollable emotion he stirred in her?
She lowered her arms, and Kane eased her to the floor. Heat rushed across her face as everyone in the lab applauded.
To her surprise, Kane bowed, flashing a smile. “Thank you, for your good wishes.” He took her hand, nodded to Mac, and led her to the steps next to the platform. Sparks danced around the perimeter of the circle. “Now I will give you a proper goodbye.” Her heart jumped as he leaned in, but his lips touched her cheek, warm and brief. “Take care, Elizabeth Barritt. Be proud of who you are, live your life for you.”
How could saying goodbye to someone she barely knew hurt so much? Tears stung her eyes at his quiet words. He made it worse by brushing hair off her forehead, his touch gentle, almost more intimate than kissing her.
“Please be careful,” she whispered. Her voice threatened to lodge in her throat, along with her tears. She laid her hand on his left wrist. “Guy is going to do whatever he needs to do to stop you.”
“The constant twinges will be a good reminder. Not a word, Beth.” His fingers cupped her chin. “I will be ready for him. Now, I believe I need to kiss you again. For luck,” he said against her lips, just before he claimed them.
This time the kiss was achingly sweet, and far too short. Kane ended it, tracing the line of her cheek before he backed out of reach.

AUTHOR
My name is Cate, and I write romantic suspense and paranormal, with some action packed YA paranormal and fantasy thrown in.
I am a huge history buff, and with my English/Irish heritage, I have always gravitated to English history. That love has taken me across the pond on a regular basis for the last 15 years. I got to combine the thrill of being in a country I love with my research addiction. :)

The Love in Time series is the culmination of those trips - and my love for romantic suspense.

FUN FACTS
Cate Dean

1.      I have been making up stories in my head since I was about five. Full blown, plot and subplot stories, with multiple characters.

2.      I collect rocks and crystals from every place I’ve been. I even have a bit of Roman stone from the 2nd century.

3.      I base most of my trips to England around castles, and I have been thrilled and awed by every one I’ve been able to visit.

4.      I’ve had so many amazing experiences in my years as a traveler – one of my favorites was dancing with a group of Arabic teenagers under a bridge on London’s South Bank. I came across them dancing to a trio of musicians, and they pulled me in to their revelry. I waltzed with three of the sweetest boys, kissed their cheeks, and went on my way, smiling the rest of the night.

5.      I love to travel on my own. The absolute freedom, the immersion in the places I go, the people I meet – I wouldn’t travel any other way.

6.      I grew up with the twins who played Tabitha on the series Bewitched. I am still friends with one of them.

7.      I love cemeteries, and have visited my share – every type from the huge and spooky Necropolis on the hill overlooking Glasgow Cathedral, to a small graveyard surrounding the old church on Dover’s high street.

8.      I am a huge Doctor Who/Torchwood fan – and I went all the way to Cardiff Bay to see where they filmed Torchwood. I’ve even touched a TARDIS, and stood eye to eye with K-9.

9.      I love love love Red Dwarf. If you’re a sci fi fan, and you haven’t seen it, go now. It’s smegging hilarious.

10.  I am a die-hard Anglophile – if you didn’t already guess. ;)

INTERVIEW
Welcome Cate Dean,  and thank you so much for taking time out of your busy schedule to sit down for an interview with us. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

I am a romantic suspense and paranormal author. I have been writing since I was in first grade – I still have the illustrated science fiction story I wrote for a school contest. I am also a huge history buff, a travel addict, and a photographer. Heading over to England every year hits all three addictions at once. I love how travel opens my mind, feeds my spirit, and changes me, every time I go. I am a visual writer, and I love being able to walk where my characters walk, to feel and see what they experience in the story.

Tell us about your work.  What are you writing now?
I just wrapped up my paranormal series, and my focus is on my romantic suspense series, Love in Time. Book one is out now, and I have plans for quite a few books in the series.

Where do you draw your inspiration from?
Everything – what I watch, what I read, where I go. Travel has been a huge inspiration for me. Since I travel on my own, I get to live as a temporary local, and experience more than I would have as a tourist just passing through.

When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
When I was fresh out of high school. I was a theatre major, and I started writing fiction on the side. I gradually blossomed from there.

What was the first romance novel you read that made an impression on you?
The Flame and the Flower, by Kathleen E. Woodiwiss. It was the only book I read by her, but it sparked my love of romance.

What do you do while you write? Do you listen to music, watch TV, eat snacks, etc.?
Depending on what I’m working on, I listen to music, or have the TV on in the background. I rarely write in complete silence – I started writing in bookstores, with the sound of voices swirling around me as I created my own worlds. I still write at my local Barnes & Noble at least once a week.

Tell us 3 surprising things about yourself.
1. I am incredibly limber – and yes, I can still do the splits, on both sides.
2. I am a direct descendent of Betsy Ross.
3. I can write in iambic pentameter – yes, I am a Shakespeare geek.

What’s the last movie you watched and loved?
I love movies, and I’ve seen a few since watching this one, but I thought Argo was brilliant. Even though I knew the ending, the suspense, and the question of how drove the story. I could go on and on and on about the movies I love, so I’ll stop now.

What’s your idea of a perfect date?
An intimate dinner, a walk on the beach, kissing to the sound of waves crashing on the sand.

If you could take a romantic trip anywhere, where would it be?
The Dordogne Valley, in France. Gorgeous countryside, castles, a winding river, and medieval villages – it has everything I’d want, and more.

Do you believe in love at first sight?
Absolutely. I had it happen to me, my first day of school in sixth grade. The world did really stop, for the first few seconds I saw him. He became my best friend, and we were inseparable, until he moved right before high school.

Top three things on your bucket list:
1. Take the Red Carpet Lord of the Rings tour in New Zealand.
2. Stand on every continent at least once.
3. Have my book on the NY Times bestseller list. J

Boxers or Briefs?
Boxers, definitely.

Alpha or Beta?
Alpha. Grrrrr.

Tattoos or Piercings?
Can I say both? I love both.

Brains or Muscles?
Brains – muscles are pretty, but brains are – stimulating.

Planner or Wing it?
Both – it depends on the situation.

Favorite feel good drink?
London Fog (Earl Grey tea with milk), on a cold morning in England.

Vanilla or chocolate?
Chocolate! Rich, dark, melty chocolate.

Laptop or desktop?
Desktop at home, laptop on the go.

Beach or mountains?
Beach, beach, beach.

Winter or summer?
Summer at the beach. ;)

Thank you so much for taking the time to let us interview you Cate Dean

Excerpt
Alex flies above the trees he’s found marked by demons. He lands just outside the blackened ground and takes a few steps, examining the singed soil. He squats down and holds his palm just over the earth, feeling the area still warm. The sound of bark cracks next to him and he looks towards the tree a few feet away. The sludge seeping down the trunk appears to still be fresh. A few dead leaves float to the ground in front of him. His eyes follow a pattern making its way up the tree as death works its way through it to the core, blackening and killing it.
He takes a few steps back and walks around the other side of the blackened ground and finds he is not too far from where he and Lisa were just sitting. “Spying on us. Outstanding,” he mumbles. He lifts himself back into the air and makes his way back over to where Lisa stands. His wings shift in the air and he finds Lisa still standing in the same place where he left her. He can see concern and fear on her face. He takes a few steps forward and tilts his head, watching her like a predator watching its prey.
She crosses her arms over her chest and feels a slight shiver touch her skin. “Alex?” she whispers. Fear creeps inside of her and her eyes scan the area, seeing nothing but the trees and vegetation. She whines softly to herself and backs up against a tree.
He steps closer towards her and reaches out to touch her, then lowers his hand. The demon inside of him wants to claim her here in the woods, wanting to make her his over and over again. The desire to grab and thrust against her, to claim her body and take her soul pulses through his body. He presses the palms of his hands to his eyes and suppresses the demon inside of him. A long sigh leaves his lips and this is all Lisa needs to know he’s near.
“Alex?” She whispers, looking side to side.
Alex uncloaks himself and appears in front of her, his eyes black and wings still extended.
She screams, “DAMMIT!” then jumps back, lifting a hand to her heart. “You scared the shit out of me! What the hell?”
“I’m sorry, I didn’t intend to.” He steps closer to her, pulling his wings into his back. “Come here.” Alex reaches for her hands and pulls her to him. He forces the fire inside of him to extinguish to a dull simmer. He cups her face and looks at her.
She lifts her gaze and her breath catches in her throat. It’s not often Alex allows his true form to emerge so freely in front of her. Her hands lift and rest on his forearms. “It’s okay now. You… startled me is all,” she sighs and relaxes. “Was there something out there? Are we alone?”
Alex watches her and feels her anxiety ease up and her heartbeat slow. He steps closer and leans in to kiss her forehead. “We are alone… for now.” He closes his eyes and swallows hard, then looks down at her again. Lust, longing and sex burn at the forefront of his mind. He grits his teeth and pushes them back. “But I think someone is here. Let’s get back to the cabin.” Lisa nods, then lifts up onto her toes and kisses him.
Alex growls softly and his eyes stare into hers, then he kisses her again with more intent. The lust encompasses him and he thrusts it towards her. She embraces his body and gasps. She leans into him and whimpers softly, gripping his shoulders tighter. His hands move to her hips and he pulls himself closer. Lisa feels herself stepping back as he presses against her. She moves her hands around his neck and feels his wings against her hands. She lifts her fingers and they move between the downy feathers. Alex lets out a soft growl at her touch.
She immediately retracts her fingers and breaks the kiss. “I’m sorry.”
He shakes his head and tells her, “Don’t stop.” She finds a soft hue of red glowing around him. He presses his lips to hers again and she closes her eyes. He deepens the kiss with his tongue massaging hers and a soft moan leaves her lips. Without hesitation, she moves her fingers into his wings again.
Alex pushes Lisa against the tree. “Alex…” she mumbles against his lips. Her fingers dig into his shoulders and she bites his bottom lip.
He answers her with another growl, but this time he grabs one of her legs and wraps it around his waist.

Uncovering You Part One: The Contract

Blurb
Smashwords: TBD

Blurb

When I wake up in a dark, unfamiliar room, I have no idea what's waiting for me in the shadows. My
imagination conjures up demons of the worst kind.
Reality is much worse:
A collar with no leash. A prison with no walls. And a life stripped of meaning.
I am presented with a vile contract and asked to sign. It outlines the terms of my servitude. The only
information I have about my captor are the two small letters inked at the bottom:
J.S.
Armed with only my memories, I must do everything I can to avoid becoming ensnared in his twisted
mind games. But in the end, it all comes down to one choice:
Resist and die.
Or submit, and sign my life away.

Excerpt

“Lilly.”
Oh God. It’s him. There’s no mistaking that rich, masculine treble.
What’s he doing down here?
“M-Mr. Stonehart,” I stutter, turning. I curse my inability to hide my surprise. He totally caught me
off-guard. I have to look up to meet his eyes. Then up some more.
The face that I find is so striking it should belong to a Greek god.
He’s younger than I expected. Late thirties, maybe early forties.
That means he started his company when he was younger than me!
Dark scruff lines his angular cheeks. His jet-black hair is styled in long, natural waves. My fingers
itch to run through it.
Totally inappropriate.
He has a prominent nose that might be too big on a less imposing man, but on him, it’s perfect.
In short, he’s a package of the purest masculinity I’ve ever seen.
And then there are his eyes. Oh my God. His eyes. They pierce into me like honing missiles. They
are the deepest black I have ever seen. They would be frightening if they weren’t so beautiful. When
the light reflects a certain way, you catch a glimpse of the purple underneath.
They are like midnight sapphires. His eyes reveal a cunning intellect. Those eyes do not miss a
thing.
Add all that to his towering height, his wide shoulders, his confident-yet-at-ease posture… and
Stonehart cuts an intimidating figure.
My gaze darts to his left hand before I can stop it. No ring. He’s unmarried.
He looks down at me, expectantly. His eyes narrow ever so slightly, and I feel like I’m being
dissected, measured up, and tucked away in some small corner of his brain. I imagine this is what a
gemstone feels like under the magnifying class of the most critical appraiser.
Stonehart clears his throat. I come to with a start, realizing I haven’t said anything in ages. I open
my mouth, but the capacity for speech seems like a foreign concept to my brain. “I—”
Somebody bumps into me from behind. I stagger forward. I’m not used to these shoes, so my heel
steps the wrong way. My ankle twists under me, and I start to fall.
I don’t fall far. The hand still on my elbow tightens, and Stonehart pulls me into him.
I plaster myself onto the solid steel wall the man has for a body. I catch a scent of his cologne. It’s
a deep, musky smell with a hint of charred spruce that is all male. It scrambles my thoughts even
more.
“Sorry!” a rushed voice calls out. From the corner of my eye, I see the postman giving a hurried,
apologetic wave.
Although the sequence lasts less than a second, it feels like an eternity. Pressed up against himlike
that, I don’t want to move. I know that I couldn’t have made a worse first impression.
Stonehart eases me off him with a firm yet gentle grip. Our eyes meet. I flush the most vibrant red.
His fingers graze my forehead as he brushes a lock of hair out of my face.
Any tenderness I may have imagined vanishes when Stonehart takes out his cell. He long dials a
key and growls an order. “Steven. See the delivery boy leaving right now? Have his building pass
revoked.”
I gape. Stonehart keeps speaking. “Wait. I thought of one better. Bar his company from accessing
the building.” There’s a pause. “For how long? Indefinitely. FedEx can talk to me when they have an
improved employee selection program in place.”
The phone call gives me just enough time to compose myself. My heart’s still beating out of my
chest. But nobody has to know that.
I speak without thinking. “You’re going to restrict the entire company from serving this building
because of that?”
Stonehart humors me with an answer. “A company’s employees are its most important asset. Their
behavior reflects the organization as a whole. If FedEx decided that clown is good enough for them, it
tells me they’re sloppy. I do not do business with sloppy organizations.”
“What about the other tenants in the building?” I ask. “Won’t that piss them off?”
When I hear myself and realize how impropermy question is, my cheeks flame red again.
Stonehart’s eyes darken, as if he cannot believe I asked that question. I open my mouth to
apologize for my imprudence, hating the way my professional skills have evaporated into thin air. I’m
cut off by a short, barked laugh.
“Miss Ryder.” He sounds amused. “I believe that is the most direct and honest question anybody
has dared ask me in weeks.” He takes my elbow again and leads me to the elevators. I have to take
two quick steps to match one of his long strides.
“Yes,” he continues. “They will be ‘pissed off.’ But the perk of owning a building—” he hits the
elevator call button, “—is that you get to make executive decisions.” He gives me an unreadable
glance as the doors open. “That is, at the risk of being questioned by inexperienced interns.”
If that isn’t a loaded remark, I don’t know what is. I flush scarlet red for the third time since I’ve
met him. I’ve never had a man throw me so off balance.
The elevator is packed, for which I’m infinitely thankful. The trip up will give me some time to
properlycompose myself.
Gratitude turns to panic when the crowd files out, meek as mice, when Stonehart steps in. None of
the people waiting in the lobby follow us.
The doors close. I’m alone in here with him. My heart’s beating as fast as a hummingbird’s wings.
He catches me staring. “Impressed?” he asks.
“They know you,” I manage.
His dark eyes flash with amusement. “Astute.”
