EXCERPT

The enormous black woman bent to pick something up, and it took Emma a moment to grasp that she was collecting the goggas (slang for insects) to cook. She grimaced slightly, finding the idea of eating flying ants repulsive, and her thoughts turned to what to make for dinner for Richard.

A short while later, the front door opened and closed behind her and she heard her husband’s familiar step. He wandered through to his family sitting outside, tugging his tie off as he reached them. Emma smiled up at him as he stood watching the spectacle in front of him for a few seconds, before he said abruptly, “Hi, Em, I’ve got something to tell you.”
