Cross My Heart
by K.D. Friedrich
Publication Date: January 19, 2015
Genres: Contemporary, Romance
Synopsis:
Struggling with the emotional and physical scars of war, Marine Pete Cross returns to his hometown, Heart Falls, New York, bitter and broken. The last person he wants to see is the stubborn tomboy from his past, Cara Sands. The guy code of ethics demands he keep his hands to himself where his best friend’s sister is concerned, but Cara never got that memo. Apparently, neither did Pete’s libido, because his desire for her is stronger than ever.
Cara has no clue where the man she loves went, but she’ll do whatever it takes to bring him back. Pete tries to push Cara away with bitterness and anger, but she yanks him right back with understanding and patience. Her persistence drags them closer to an outcome that might destroy them both or show him, once and for all, the power of second chances.
Pete leaves for the Marines without so much as a goodbye to Cara, unknowingly hurting his best friends sister and the one girl he cared for.
He returns home a different man. He's scarred from war and struggling with PTSD. He pushes Cara away, he doesn't think he's good enough for her that he's broken and not what she needs. Not to mention she's still his best friends sister so it would be wrong for him to want her. So he turns to the bottle to help him cope.
Cara on the other hand has no qualms about going after the man she loves regardless of what he thinks is right. She's loved him for years and she's not going to let him go this time. She's the only one who can pull him out of the dark place he's allowed himself to go.
I loved Cara, not giving up on the man who's done everything he can to push her away, saving him from himself.
The author did an amazing job of showing us Pete's struggle with PTSD and what went on in his head, Cross My Heart was my first book from the author but it won't be my last.
