my time in the affair

  Synopsis
~Mischa~
I made a conscious decision to cheat on my husband.
Now, before you judge me, hear my story. Hear how much I'm like you, how similar my thoughts are to your own. Yes, I'm a horrible person. Yes, I've done horrible things. Yes, I don't deserve forgiveness. Yes, bad things happened because of my actions.
But I'm willing to bet I've done things that maybe, just maybe, you have thought of doing.
Maybe, just maybe, you're not as innocent as you'd like to think.
Or maybe I'm not so guilty ...
WARNING: This book involves CHEATING. The word AFFAIR is in the title. The main character has an AFFAIR. In the synopsis (directly above), she states that she intentionally has an AFFAIR. If you don't like CHEATING, then you have been VERY WELL warned. Also, this book is primarily written in the third-person narrative.

10 Things You (probably) Didn't Know About the Book

1. I thought of the general idea last year, but resisted writing until January of this year

2. It underwent several name changes - originally "A Conscious Decision", then "Why We Don't Sleep With Other People", then "A Time in an Affair", and finally what we have today.

3. I find inspiration in a lot of sources - a movie called 28 Rooms is about a couple having an affair, both cheating on their spouses, yet by the end you're rooting for them; I wanted to capture that same feeling. A Simpsons episode where Homer gets incredibly obese and Marge has a serious conversation with him about romance and physical attraction. And even the movie The Interview - Seth Rogen's character's last name is Rapaport, the number for North Korea's media/PR department is 0-0-0-0, which is Tal's number, the song Firework, lots of little things; I binge watched the movie while writing.

4. I wrote the entire rough draft in a little under two weeks, around 80,000 words.

5. I originally wanted it to be a "Knight & Day", "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" kind of story - two people meet, intrigue, sex, funny escapades. I didn't set out to write a serious, candid, "inside look" at an affair - Mischa's voice was just very strong.

6. This is the first time I really put myself into my characters' shoes - when certain things would happen, I would stop and try to think of how I would literally react if it were happening to me. So a lot of Mischa's hangups with Tal or her nervous moments, you're reading mine. Same with the confrontation with her husband - how would I react if my husband said he'd had an affair? How would I react if he acted like Mike? How would my friend's react if I told them I had an affair? I thought about it a lot.

7. Tal's name was always Tal, but I resisted using Canaan for a while, I worried that it sounded cheesy. But I loved it, so after several other tries, I stuck with it.

8. Mischa's looks are entirely based on Olivia Munn - to the point I googled her ethnicity in order to describe Mischa's somewhat accurately. I'm not even particularly an Olivia Munn fan, but I just had her in my brain the whole time.

9. I consider myself a somewhat good at gauging how the indie world will react to a book - but this book threw me for a loop. I had NO. IDEA. it would get the reaction it has. I figured it would be "okay", that I'd get a lot of "her first book was better", as tends to happen in this industry, and particularly with a book that is a 180 from the other books AND a taboo subject matter.

10. I almost never ever read books with cheating in them. Ever. Go figure .... I wonder if I hadn't written this, would I like it? BAHAHAHAHA

AboutTheAuthor
Stylo Fantome
Crazy woman living in an undisclosed location in Alaska (where the need for a creative mind is a necessity!), I have been writing since ..., forever? Yeah, that sounds about right. I have been told that I remind people of Lucille Ball - I also see shades of Jennifer Saunders, and Denis Leary. So basically, I laugh a lot, I'm clumsy a lot, and I say the F-word A LOT.
I like dogs more than I like most people, and I don't trust anyone who doesn't drink. No, I do not live in an igloo, and no, the sun does not set for six months out of the year, there's your Alaska lesson for the day. I have mermaid hair - both a curse and a blessing - and most of the time I talk so fast, even I can't understand me.
Yeah. I think that about sums me up.
