Walk-on-the-Wild-Side

Suzie Jay will be on tour July 13-27 with her novel Walk on the Wild Side: The Reinvention of Violet Monte

Violet Monte believed her love and marriage would last a lifetime–until she catches her husband in bed with a younger woman. When she realizes she was nothing more than a trophy wife, Violet decides to chase her own dreams. The only problem is, she has no idea what they are. Violet begins to pursue her own interests which sometime include spying on her mysterious neighbor, who might actually be a lady of the night. Just as Violet is finding stability–– and the possibility of opening her heart again–– her husband returns not with an apology, but with a signed pre-nuptial agreement, claiming he’ll keep everything and leave her with nothing. Violet is far from the compliant woman he once knew but she doubts she has the strength to fight and win, until her intriguing neighbor unlocks what Violet has been looking for all along. Can Violet fight back from a lost love and reinvent herself into the person she always wanted to be or will she forever be just an ex-trophy wife? Please visit CLP Blog Tours for all the tour stops!

A few seconds later the light upstairs went off, and the entire shop fell into darkness.

“Looks like he’s gone to bed,” Violet shrugged, assuming their mission was over.

“Either that or he doesn’t want anyone to know he’s there. Jump into the backseat and throw that rug over you,” David demanded, pointing to an old, itchy looking blanket.

“Eeew. I don’t think it’s been washed for months,” she complained, holding it out between two fingers, trying to further inspect it.

“Mom, hurry up, this isn’t over,” he snapped.

She could sense he was getting impatient, so she scaled the seat and laid down on the floor in the back, pulling the blanket over herself. It smelled, even worse than she anticipated.

“Hurry, David, I’m suffocating. The germs are waging war. I can see them lining up; they’re marching toward me. My God! They’re armed. Send help.”

“Hopefully they invade your voice box,” he laughed as he slowed the car down. He wound the window down and pulled up to a stop next to the man in the cap.

“Hey, you!” David called out.

The man turned around. It was Lorenzo.

“Oh hello, Officer. You scared me. I didn’t recognize you at first. How can I help you?”

“What are you doing out here in the middle of the night?”

“I’m not breaking the law, am I? I was unaware of any curfew in this state,” Lorenzo drawled, his voice dripping with sarcasm.

“No, not at all. This is just friendly banter.” David smirked

“Well, I’m actually walking down to the taxi rank by the beach to grab a cab to take me to the airport. I have to go out of town for a week or so. Sick aunt.”

“I’m sorry to hear that,” David mumbled.

“Thank you. Now if you don’t mind, I should be going.”

“Certainly.” David wound up the window and drove away

“Okay, Mom, if you haven’t been eaten alive by mysterious, flesh-eating bacteria, you can come out.”

She didn’t need to be asked twice. She threw the blanket off and jumped back into the front seat. “Draw your gun. David. I think there is something living in that blanket. For the love of God, shoot it, set it alight, or at the very least bury it.”

“You are such an idiot, Mom. I say that with love of course.” He sneaked a smile in her direction.

Once she had settled back into the front seat and checked her hair for lice, she looked at David with wide eyes. “So, what’s the verdict?”

“It was Lorenzo. He’s going out of town.”

“So I’m safe?” She felt relief wash over her.

“Looks like it.” He smiled. “But deep in my gut I wouldn’t be surprised if there was more to Lorenzo’s midnight trip than what meets the eye.”

“Well who cares? For now, I’m safe.” Violet fiddled with the radio dial switching between stations. She stopped and David was subjected to her screaming. “I feel good, dun ah nun a nun nun, so good, so good. I got you, dun, dun, dun.”

“Mom, if you don’t stop you’ll scare the alley cats.”

She didn’t listen and happily sang all the way home.

“I wish earplugs were part of my detective survival kit.” David laughed before singing along.
