Shawnte Borris ~ Interview and Giveaway

Do you have any strange writing habits (like standing on your head or writing in the shower)?
I eat tons of sweets. I live off of M&M, Twizzlers and Skittles. This year on my US book tour readers were bringing me bags of the stuff (so sweet- THANK YOU AGAIN) I’m still eating them.

Just as your books inspire authors, what authors have inspired you to write?
Every author that I read or sit with, I learn so much. They inspire me in many different ways, they light a fire under my butt to get back to writing or educated me on how to handle this industry.

(Crap, I read the question wrong, lets try this again)
Authors haven’t really inspired me to write. Truthful I’ve never finished a book front to end until Twilight came out then all hell broke loose and I can’t quit reading. I started writing because my children were both in school full time and I was bored. I had my first book *With Love* written and publish within twelve weeks and debut in the top ten on Amazon.

What was the hardest part of writing this book?
Staying focused and staying on a time line. Something always comes up on the farm that I need to deal with or the school needs an extra volunteer or the neighbour needs help or a child is sick

How important are names to you in your books? Do you choose the names based on liking the way it
sounds or the meaning? Do you have any name choosing resources you recommend?
I have only chosen one character name and her name is Kirsten. My children, nieces or someone else picks or gives me my character names. For example – we got a new cat and the children were fighting over a name. One wanted Thunder and one wanted Chocolate then all of a sudden my daughter says, “Mom you need a character named, Chocolate Thunder.” Of course I’d laughed for a different reason and in Waking Up In Leather, MC Series – I have an Aussie with a road name of Chocolate Thunder.

What do you consider to be your best accomplishment?
My Children. My goal is to make them proud individuals with a hard work ethic to give back to our world and I think while watching and listening to them I achieved that.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Geez I don’t know what I’m doing on Tuesday never mind, in 10 years. My goal was to be mom and wife and I have both of those and I’m rocking out these two roles. My youngest will be eighteen and graduating high school, so I’m guessing annoying my hubs with empty nest syndrome.

Have you ever stepped out of your comfort zone and discovered a whole new genre?  How did it turn
out?
I try paranormal but I’m just not a fan, I can’t seem to get into them. However saying that I did enjoy Twilight and a few from RL Mathewson. (I love RL’s other romance books)

What writing advice do you have for other aspiring authors?
Write for you and no one else. Don’t put too much thought into other people’s opinion. Write what you love and write something that makes you happy!

If you didn't like writing books, what would you do for a living?
I was a special needs teacher before I became an author so I’d probably go back to doing that.
I taught for five years before I decided to devote my time to writing.

Do you read your reviews? Do you respond to them, good or bad? How do you deal with the bad?
I read all my reviews (I know, an author really shouldn’t) but I love it. I learn lots from reading them, what works, what doesn’t, what readers want. The really bad reviews- I just laugh at them because some people just talk from their ass. It makes a great night for entertainment.

What is something you want to accomplish before you die?
What do I want to accomplish before I die … I want to travel the world. I want to experience new things, enjoy new things, like new things and taste new things.

What is your least favorite part of the publishing / writing process?
Waiting for the book to come back from the editor, her opinion of my work is very important to me. Publish is just tons of tiny steps and waiting so it’s just a pain in the butt.

Is there one subject you would never write about as an author? What is it?
Nope- if it inspires me to write I will. Nothing is off limits to me.

Is there a certain type of scene that's harder for you to write than others?
Sex is hard to write, because you get going into it, then you go back to read it and they are all pretzel like.

What are you working on now? What is your next project?
I am currently working on Playing The Game, Derek Backhard (book 2 in The Game series) *To read a two chapter sneak peek go to either iBooks or my webpage* . I’m hoping to have this out early fall. The next two books are Waking Up in Leather and He’s My Home.
