The Girl In The Closet by Michelle Heard ~ Release & review

BIRDIE

Escaping an unthinkable nightmare, I’m given a second chance at life. Cole Trenton is the first person to look past the broken girl. But the moment I give him my heart he leaves.

Secrets never stay buried, and mine returns with a vengeance.
Cole walks back into my life when I need him most. He shows me how to be strong, that monsters only have the power you give them.

But my biggest fear remains.
How do I silence the girl in the closet before I lose Cole again?

COLE

I always knew Birdie Liles was different, but that didn’t stop me from falling for her.
After years of being away, I return home to bury my best friend,
only to learn that Birdie’s in trouble.

If I had known about the monster from her past, I never would’ve left.
I went to fight someone else’s war while I left the woman I love unprotected.

But I’m here now, and I’m ready to send Birdie’s demon right back to hell.

Review

Birdie has a horrific past, she came to live with her foster family after being found severely underweight and abused by her father. He was locked up for a measly 15 years.
She has scars, both emotional and physical so she keeps to herself. She loves Cole from afar, until circumstances put them in each others path. How he handles her panic attack brings them close. He knows she had a past though he didn't know what, he was gentle with her and realized too late that they could be together.
Years later he's home from the military to bury his brother and as it happens Birdie is in need of protection. Who better than the man who has training and has always loved her?
Their story is a slow burn, Cole has to tiptoe through a mine field to get to her heart but what a ride it is.
Birdie has to face her demons, share everything with the man she loves and hope that she survives long enough to know how it feels to truly be loved.
Is it dark? Yes to an extent, The Girl in the Closet deals with childhood trauma that haunts her into adulthood. I've seen it called depressing but I didn't find it to be, I had hope from the beginning that things would get better for Birdie.
I loved the characters, the secondary characters play a big part and I can't wait to get each of their stories. Overall it's a tragic story that shows you what unconditional love means and the wounds it can heal. Loved it, can't wait for the next book.
